Dr. Ricardo Restrepo completed his medical training in Medellín, Colombia, followed by a Psychiatry residency and Addiction Psychiatry fellowship at Boston University Medical Center. He also earned a Master of Public Health in Global Public Health from New York University in 2008 while serving as Director of the Addiction Psychopharmacology Clinic at the Addiction Institute of New York, part of St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital.
Since 2012, Dr. Restrepo has served as Medical Director of the SATP/Buprenorphine Clinic at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. He holds academic appointments at the University of California, Riverside, and Charles R. Drew University, and also teaches and supervises psychiatry residents from the University of California, Irvine. His educational efforts span multiple disciplines, including psychiatry, family medicine, anesthesiology, internal medicine, and others.
Dr. Restrepo is an active member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) and contributes to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Review Course. His academic interests span addiction psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, medical education in psychiatry and addiction medicine, transcultural psychiatry, and behavioral addictions.
He is also a local site investigator for the VA-BRAVE research initiative and recently completed the Certificate Program in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research (CPTR) at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS).
With over 25 years of experience working with immigrant and underserved populations, Dr. Restrepo has served as a volunteer with Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) and Synergy for Justice, contributing to projects in the United States, Latin America, and the Middle East. He has also served as a consultant to the United Nations on mental health and human rights issues.
Dr. Restrepo has authored chapters in textbooks on addiction and human rights, co-authored works on buprenorphine treatment and women’s health in addiction, and collaborated on the Spanish translation of the DSM-5. He is board re-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry—and is also a professional musician.
